Individuals who are keen to sell old laptops and purchase a new machine have been advised on what to consider when buying a device.

Writing for CNet, Andrew Hoyle described how it is important to think about what the laptop will be used for and its requirements before handing over any cash.

Those who plan to use their device for merely sending emails and viewing websites have been advised to spend less and invest in a netbook.

Meanwhile, people who intend to regularly carry their laptop with them should consider weight and durability.

Mr Hoyle explained: "If you'll often be on the go, then make sure the laptop can take some punishment. Flimsy plastic shells probably won't be as robust as an aluminium chassis."

In a recent article for Portfolio.com, Joe Brancatelli reassured individuals considering investing in a netbook that they are now fitted with larger screens and better keyboards than two years ago.
