Interest in mobile phone recycling may be increased by the new iPhone 4S, as Apple has revealed more than one million people worldwide pre-ordered the device in the first day of sales ahead of its launch later this month.

The figure breaks the previous record of 600,000 in a 24-hour period set at last year's iPhone 4 launch and senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing at Apple Philip Schiller said the firm has been "blown away" by demand for the handset.

He noted day-one pre-orders for the model "have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched" and said the company is "thrilled" with the response from consumers.

The iPhone 4S goes on sale in the UK on October 14th and all major carriers, including O2, Orange and Vodafone, will be stocking it.

Potential buyers may want to look at selling old mobile phones in order to pay for the iPhone 4S, as it is not available for free unless customers opt for a more expensive monthly tariff.
